Mourinho: Chelsea star will sign a new contract

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that club legend John Terry is close to extending his stay at the club beyond next summer.

The defender’s current deal expires at the end of the season and Chelsea fans may have been starting to speculate whether the club would keep the 34 year old at the club.

He has been ever-present for the Blues this season and has helped fire his club to the top of Premier League table with some brilliant defending, and has also contributed four goals along the way.

Blues fans have always been wary of losing their older players for nothing once their contract expires, especially after record goalscorer Frank Lampard was told he could leave the club last summer, and any Chelsea fan could tell you how that decision came back to bite their side.

Didier Drogba also left the club for free following Chelsea’s Champions League win, but has since returned to West London.

However, Mourinho seemed confident that there would be no such repeat when it comes to discussing Terry’s future:

He’s a very important player in the team, so the next contract sooner or later will come.

Earlier in the week, he also claimed that his captain is playing as well as he was a decade ago, when Chelsea won back-to-back Premier League titles.

He’s full of confidence. I see my John of 2004, 05, 06. I don’t see any difference.

Chelsea travel to Southampton later today (Sunday) as they look to maintain or extend their lead at the top of the table, which is currently 3 points over Manchester City.
