Southampton 1-1 Chelsea – Match Report

The Blues travelled to St Mary’s today less than 3 days after their victories over West Ham but this time round, they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Saido Mane opened the scoring for Southampton when he found the net after 15 minutes. Terry attempted to clear the ball but was quickly caught out as Dusan Tadic chipped the ball over the defense and the Senegalese Mane calmly made the breakthrough.

However,  he saw his goal cancelled out when Eden Hazard equalised just before half time even though Chelsea managed to control and dominate without showing any signs of coming up with an equaliser.

The Belgian picked the ball up on the left hand side before crossing and going past the Japanese Yoshida, with the incredible speed we all know before firing a low shot in the right far corner of Forster’s net.

Chelsea racked up a total of 28 shots against West Ham two days ago but it was a completely different story today as Eden Hazard’s shot was the visitor’s only one throughout the first half.

Jose Mourinho decided to make changes shortly after half time, replacing the German Schurrle who, having made just three starts, has really struggled this season, with Willian.

Chelsea raised the intensity, and Hazard came close to adding a second goal before Cesc Fabregas appeared to have been clipped in the box  by a Southampton defender and soon appealed for a penalty but referee decided to interpret this a dive and looked unimpressed as he booked the Spaniard.

With 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Mourinho introduced Didier Drogba, hoping the legend would make a breakthrough and score or assist a goal but without success as Chelsea got more and more frustrated.

Just 5 minutes later, Southampton suffered the loss of the Frenchman Schneiderlin as he was shown a second yellow card for a foul on the Spaniard Cesc Fabregas.

However, the hosts survived as the Blues looked to make a breakthrough in added minutes and kept pushing but it ended in 1-1 draw as both sides earned a deserved point.
