Xabi Alonso has spoken publicly for the first time as Chelsea manager, setting out his ambitions at Stamford Bridge and laying down an early marker to the squad.

Alonso officially started work on July 1 as BlueCo’s fifth permanent appointment and took his first pre-season training session on Thursday at Cobham. After a 2025/26 campaign that burned through Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, this is the first time the new manager has addressed the job directly – and it matters.
Alonso sets the tone – culture first, results to follow
Alonso was clear that the squad’s ceiling depends on what gets built at Cobham before a ball is kicked competitively. “You can’t hold back anything, everything is for the team,” he said. “Hard work is a must. We need to create that culture, it starts here in a daily process at Cobham.”

That’s about as direct a message as a new manager can send. No grand tactical promises, no talk of trophies in year one – just a demand for commitment and a signal that anyone not on board won’t be tolerated. Given how fractured last season felt, we’d say that’s exactly the right note to open on.
He was also candid about why he took the job. “The potential of the team and squad made me really excited, to find a squad to work with, create a football idea, bring excitement to the stadium and connect with the fans,” Alonso said. “It feels great, but it’s a big honour. To be part of this great club that is one of the best in the world with great success in the last decades, and it’s a big privilege to be a part, and now it’s looking forward to the challenge.”

Alonso wants Stamford Bridge loud again – and says it starts with him
One of the more pointed parts of the interview was Alonso’s acknowledgement of the atmosphere problem at the Bridge. The disconnect between the stands and the pitch has been ugly at times under the current ownership, and he didn’t shy away from it. “I know the energy that this stadium has and we need to create that energy and this bond with all the parts,” he said.

His message to supporters was straightforward: “We want to share that belief that good things will come if we are together and we create this strength, it has to come from us to bring the energy, but together, we can achieve great things in the coming years.”
We’ll get our first look at how this translates on the pitch when the Blues head to Sydney for the start of their pre-season tour later this month.
