Fresh footage has emerged showing Jude Bellingham striking confirmed Chelsea signing Valentin Barco in the face following Argentina’s World Cup elimination of England, Football London have reported. Barco, who is set to join the Blues from Strasbourg for the 2026/27 season in a deal worth €40million (£34m), was caught up in a post-match scuffle that also involved Morgan Rogers and a number of Argentina players.

Barco wasn’t entirely innocent – but Bellingham overstepped

The full picture is a little more nuanced than early reports suggested. During the match, Barco ran past several England players to celebrate Enzo Fernandez’s equaliser, getting uncomfortably close to Nico O’Reilly before John Stones shoved him away. The referee had to step in, though Barco avoided any additional sanction at the time.

At the final whistle – with Argentina through after Lautaro Martinez came off the bench to grab the winner – Bellingham appeared to clock Barco either from memory or after a comment in his direction, striding over and clipping him in the face. The pair exchanged a shove and some fierce words before Morgan Rogers and Bellingham were dragged away. Dean Henderson, of all people, put himself between Bellingham and the Argentinian players.

Frankly, Barco was winding people up and clearly got a reaction. That said, Bellingham initiating physical contact at a World Cup is the kind of moment that follows a player around, and it certainly won’t be the last we hear of it. Barco’s involvement in Argentina’s World Cup squad had already made him a talking point – now it’s for a very different reason.

What it means for us – and it’s not the disaster some will make it

Barco has played just 19 minutes of World Cup football for Argentina, but he’s clearly not someone who blends into the background. BlueCo are paying €40m between Strasbourg and Chelsea’s broader network to bring him to Stamford Bridge, and the profile on him coming out of Ligue 1 paints a picture of a midfielder with real edge and intensity. This incident is consistent with that.

He’ll arrive late to pre-season alongside Reece James, Fernandez, Trevoh Chalobah and Malo Gusto due to his World Cup commitments, walking into a squad already being shaped by Xabi Alonso. Alonso has been at Cobham since earlier this month and has already started working with new faces including Geovany Quenda and Dastan Satpayev.

A fiery temperament isn’t automatically a problem – plenty of elite players have it. What matters is whether Barco can channel it into performances rather than flashpoints. On that front, we’ll find out soon enough.
