Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez Post Backfires as Club Delete World Cup Blunder

Chelsea delete Fernandez post – and the backlash says it all

Football London reported on Wednesday that Chelsea were forced to delete a photograph of Enzo Fernandez from their official social media pages after it triggered waves of backlash from English fans. The post – captioned “Enzo Fernandez” with an explosion emoji – celebrated his equaliser in Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Fernandez curled Argentina level with just five minutes remaining after Anthony Gordon had given England the lead early in the second half. Lautaro Martinez then broke English hearts with a towering header two minutes into stoppage time, eliminating Thomas Tuchel’s side from the tournament.

Fans were quick to vent their frustrations at Chelsea’s social media team, to the point that the club deleted the post shortly after.

A clumsy call – but the outrage isn’t entirely fair either

Frankly, whoever approved that post should have seen this coming from a mile off. Celebrating a goal that knocked England out of a World Cup semi-final, on an official club account, hours after it happened – that’s not bold global branding, that’s just poor judgment. Delete it all you want; the damage was done the moment it went up.

That said, not everyone in the replies was furious. Some questioned why there was so much commotion, pointing to Chelsea’s international fanbase and the appeal of non-English players in the squad.

But context matters. England just got knocked out of a World Cup semi-final. Reading the room is a basic skill, and Chelsea’s social media team failed that test spectacularly. Fernandez remains central to our squad – you can read more about his current situation at the club here – and the last thing he or we need is unnecessary noise around his name at a tournament where he’s been one of the best players on the pitch.

The Blues have enough going on without self-inflicted controversies. Get it together.
