That’s a reported agreement rather than an official club confirmation, but Romano’s sourcing on Chelsea business this window has been reliable, and the fee breakdown lines up with a striker who simply never forced his way into Xabi Alonso’s plans.

Chelsea have spent this window trimming a bloated roster, and Fofana’s exit is part of that wider squad reduction effort. He was never going to be first-choice competition for the front line Alonso is building, and the club had reportedly earmarked him for a permanent sale rather than another loan.

Keeping a player who can’t get near the matchday squad serves nobody, and Chelsea’s decision to cash in now rather than send him out on loan again feels overdue given how his time at Stamford Bridge has actually played out.

Fofana joined from Molde in January 2023 for a fee in excess of £10m, arriving with genuine hype as a young striker for the future. He made just four appearances for Chelsea and hasn’t featured for the club since May 2023, instead shuttled out on loan to Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and Strasbourg over the following three seasons.
