Shearer: I think Chelsea would be a fantastic move for Stones

Former England captain Alan Shearer believes that a move to Chelsea would be “fantastic” for John Stones. Shearer was speaking on the Match of the Day and out rightly rejected Rio Ferdinand’s comment on the move.

I’ve heard it said by Rio Ferdinand that it would be a bad move to go to Chelsea. I think it will be a fantastic move.

The young Everton defender has been publicly courted by the Blues and had two bids rejected by the Merseyside club. The 21-year-old, however, has shown that the discussion on his future hasn’t affected him by putting up a good display in the 2-2 draw to Watford.

Stones made 23 Premier League appearances last season and is viewed as the long term successor to John Terry by the Blues. He still has four years to run on his current deal and the club isn’t interested in selling him. But, a bid in excess of £30 million could still sway their heads.

Shearer believes that Stones would be ideal at Chelsea playing under Jose Mourinho and learning from Terry.

He would be playing under the best manager in the Premier League. And he’d be watching and learning from the best centre-half there has been in the Premier League in John Terry.

Stones has been courted by Manchester United too, which speaks volumes of his potential. Apart from being young and English, his calmness on the pitch coupled with his intelligent reading of the game makes him one of the coveted young defenders in the Premier League.

The speculation around Stones will probably hover till the transfer window ends or till he makes a move to Chelsea. Having already registered their official interest, it remains to be seen if Mourinho goes back with an improved bid.
