A pay rise and five-year deal secure Pedro Neto’s Chelsea future

Chelsea reward Neto’s commitment amid City interest

According to The Guardian, Chelsea have rewarded Neto’s strong start to the season and commitment to the club with a new deal. The report, published on 11 September, states that the Portugal international attracted summer interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, but indicated that he wanted to remain and play for Xabi Alonso.

Neto’s decision to stay at Stamford Bridge has been followed by improved terms. Chelsea have secured the 26-year-old on a five-year agreement that includes the option of an additional year, while he is also set to receive a pay rise. Chelsea’s stance on Pedro Neto

The Guardian reports that Chelsea’s owners use a strategy of lengthy incentivised contracts. The club have also shown that players on multi-year agreements can still receive pay increases as a reward for good performances. Further contract renewals are expected to be announced soon, according to the same report.

Neto’s renewal comes after Chelsea sold Enzo Fernández to Manchester City for £125m during the closing hours of the transfer window. The report says Chelsea concluded that a sale was the right long-term move. It states that the Stamford Bridge hierarchy concluded Fernández’s relationship with his teammates had broken down after his public comments, while the midfielder had separately continued to push for a new challenge.

Chelsea had held initial discussions with Fernández over a new contract, but he was not handed one. The club were prepared to retain the midfielder if their valuation was not met before deciding to sell him to City. Neto’s form and role under Alonso

Alonso has used Neto as an attacking wingback this season, and the 26-year-old has scored twice in five appearances. Since joining Chelsea from Wolves for £54m in 2024, Neto has registered 40 goal involvements for the Blues.

Wider implications for Chelsea

Neto now joins João Pedro, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo in receiving improved terms in 2026. Cole Palmer signed a new deal in 2024 and committed his future to Chelsea in an interview with The Guardian last season.

Alonso was appointed in mid-May after Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior in April. The Guardian views Neto’s renewal as evidence that leading players have bought into the project and will be rewarded by the club.
