Ivanovic could leave Chelsea at the end of the season

Branislav Ivanovic could leave Chelsea next summer as his contract runs out at the end of the season and at the moment there are no signs that Chelsea will renew it.

Ivanovic turns 32 in February and Chelsea have a strong policy on players over 30, that they usually only get 1 year contract extensions which they must earn. Chelsea’s vice captain has come under strong criticism by the media so far this season and has been labelled as Chelsea’s worst player so far.

The Serbian joined Chelsea in January 2008 from Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow for a reported fee of £9m. Over the years Ivanovic has been a regular in our defence and has produced consistently high quality performances. However in parts of last season towards the end and at the start of this season, he’s been below average. Hopefully he can return to his previous form.

If Ivanovic is to be released, it’s expected that he could turn up in the MLS where he will face much lower quality opposition and play at a lower intensity, with Ivanovic now in his early 30s, this may suit him better.

The Mirror also reports that Jose Mourinho sees his full backs being Cesar Azpilicueta and new signing Baba Rahman for the long term future of the club.
