Nemanja Matic brandishes Premier League table as ‘unrealistic’

Despite Chelsea falling to 16th place in the Premier League table following the 1-0 loss to Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, Blues midfielder Nemanja Matic has reacted quickly to rule out relegation, saying that the league table is unrealistic.

The current champions are currently sitting only three points above the relegation zone in the Premier League table, in what is very unheard of circumstances for the West London club. As they fell to their seventh defeat of the season on Saturday at the Britannia Stadium, without Jose Mourinho who was serving a stadium ban, things start to look worse and worse for the Blues.

The disastrous form to the start of the season has left people wondering as to where Chelsea will end up finishing this current season, but Serbian midfielder Matic is adamant that the table doesn’t reflect how well the side have been playing as of late. Speaking to The Standard, Matic said:

“I think we deserve more. We are not used to being in this position.”

“But we don’t look at the table because last year when we were champions, we just tried to take it game by game and wait for Manchester City to drop points.”

“The table is not realistic now.”

Portuguese boss Mourinho wasn’t allowed into the Britannia for the Premier League game, but former Benfica star Matic wasn’t using that as an excuse.

“He [Mourinho] prepared for the game in the last couple of training sessions after Dynamo Kiev.”

“We knew what we had to do. We did our job well.”

“There was only one situation which was when they scored and they were lucky.”

Following the upcoming international break, Chelsea will be hoping to turn their form around as soon as they can, starting with their clash with Norwich City, who came up from the Championship this season, at Stamford Bridge.
