Sunderland sign Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji

Sunderland have officially completed the signing of Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji for £8m, the club’s official website reports.

The Senegal international only succeeded to make one appearance for the Blues during his one season at Stamford Bridge.

David Moyes, the new Sunderland manager, has made the 27-year-old his first signing at his new club.

Chelsea have made an admirable profit from such deal, as they signed Djilobodji from Ligue 1 side Nantes for £3m last season, making £5m profit of the most recent transfer.

Djilobodji spent the second half of last season on loan at Werder Bremen, where he helped his side to fight relegation by scoring an 88th minute winner on the final day to secure the survival.

Despite having no success at Chelsea, the center-back – who is also able to play as a defensive midfielder – has been capped 13 times for the Senegal national side, also playing in the team at the African Cup of Nations 2015.

Chelsea are surely in for new defenders, as it’s unlikely that Antonio Conte will go through the upcoming season with just John Terry, Gary Cahill and currently injured Kurt Zouma as his main defenders for the job.
