Chelsea’s rumoured interest in Franck Kessie actually makes a lot of sense. The Blues are about to be particularly short in that department when Oscar departs for China, and Kessie is a player who Antonio Conte and his Italian connections will know well from Serie A.
The icing on the cake is the relatively modest £20m fee that outlets like Calcio Mercato have been associating with the player.
The only issue now is whether alleged interest from Tottenham and Juventus could see that price spiral beyond what we can afford – or at the very least what we want to pay.
While our competition for signings with Tottenham has gone well in the past – thank you Willian – even their interest could see Atalanta raise their asking price. As for Juventus, they rarely miss out on a player they want from Serie A, and if their interest is legitimate it could be a serious obstacle.
