This morning’s rumours have Chelsea linked once again with Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, who would apparently cost more than £50m.
The Metro is one of the sites carrying the story, claiming that we are at the head of the queue to sign the forward, along with Arsenal.
While Morata has plenty of ability, it’s a deal that just doesn’t add up for Chelsea. £50m is an absurdly large amount of money for a player who has never managed a consistent goalscoring season. Despite being a local lad who is loved by the fans, he is barely getting minutes for Real this term, even with injuries and bad form affecting Karim Benzema.
He looks out of shape and out of place in a Real shirt, and paying £50m for a player in that situation is not a smart move. Nor is it the kind of move that Michael Emenalo and the board have sanctioned in recent years, with big money moves becoming rarer over the past few seasons.
Let’s hope that they keep their wallets in their pockets on this occasion, at least until we see that fee come down significantly.
