The Metro are one of countless outlets reporting an eye-watering £70m price tag on Rodriguez, which would clearly be a massive and probably unwise outlay on a player whose value is uncertain after losing his spot in the Real Madrid team.
Despite this, the Blues should not drop their interest in J-Rod. Just because he couldn’t play regularly in one of the most talented footballing sides we’ve seen for years doesn’t mean he’s past it as a player. We are actually in a fairly strong position in this negotiation. The former Porto man wants minutes at the top level and Chelsea can offer it to him.
The best strategy at this point is to wait. By the end of August, his asking price will be dropping as both he and Real are desperate to secure a deal. If we can pick him up on the cheap, this could be a coup.
If we spend £70m, it could be a disaster.
