Former Blues defender Filipe Luis has opened up about his infamous Chelsea career, which ended in just one year’s time after a move from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014.
The Brazilian international wanted to try out a new challenge in a new league, but claims he was â€wrong†to leave Atleti for Chelsea.
I was wrong and I realised when I arrived in London, but I had my reasons: to live the experience of playing in another league, another country, another culture.
Luis says he even turned down a chance to join Bayern Munich at the time. Atletico were very kind to give him the chance to re-sign for Diego Simeone’s side, whom he still plays for.
I chose between Bayern and Chelsea and I went for the same reason as what Atleti offered me to re-sign. That is my case, but there are other footballers who go for money and there is nothing wrong with it. It is reasonable.
– Filipe Luis, El Mundo
Filipe Luis was signed as a replacement for Ashley Cole, but made no more than 15 appearances during the 2014/15 campaign. He found himself on the bench behind the ever-versatile Cesar Azpilicueta, who Jose Mourinho wanted to start every possible game, while Branislav Ivanovic served the side from the right full-back’s position.
