“Those are things I have picked up” – Thibaut Courtois reveals what he has learnt from goalkeeping legends Buffon and Schwarzer

Thibaut Courtois is considered one of the best goalkeepers in football after he heroics on goal for Chelsea and previously for Atletico Madrid but the Belgium star wants a prolonged career as Gianluigi Buffon had.

The Chelsea shot stopper has been criticized lately for this mistakes in goal that has led to defeats for the Blues in several competitions this season.

Despite his issues in goal for Chelsea, he still attracts top clubs to him as reports have had it lately.

The 24-year old has been targeted by real Madrid to replace Keylor Navas as Telegraph reports, but if he will have a long career as any of football’s goalkeeping legends such as Buffon, Mark Schwarzer and Iker Casillas, Courtois will need to begin learning a few tips and he admits to have began.

“Everyone knows how much and how hard we train. If I hope to continue goalkeeping until I am 36 or 37 then you have to think about how I train. For Buffon, I hear he trains less on the field and he is more focused on keeping his muscles strong. When I see how Mark Schwarzer, at 41, was able to train here then you see what is possible. Those are things I have picked up.

There were maybe certain times where I maybe went a little lighter on certain things. Then you think: ‘No, I’ve got to do more.’ If I have a little injury problem or a hamstring niggle then I think I might need to do some more stretching or do some more preventive exercises. I think that’s very important in football and that was perhaps a habit that was underappreciated in our sport in the past.”

Chelsea will be looking to keep Courtois beyond this season while Antonio Conte is also left with the unenviable task of keeping the Belgium international happy when he names his starting 11 for the FA Cup final on Saturday.
