Jody Morris’ move could be a mistake for him and for Chelsea

Frank Lampard has been appointed Derby County manager, and according to reports in places like Football.London, Jody Morris will be leaving Chelsea to become his assistant.

While it’s natural that the pair would want to work together, it is also something of a sideways move for Morris. He has been doing exceptionally well as youth coach at Chelsea, and if he wants to make the step up to the senior game – which would be understandable – he seems the perfect choice to be assistant to Maurizio Sarri or whoever else we appoint this summer.

Alternatively, if he wants to go to the next level, why not become a manager in his own right? There will be no shortage of interest given his historic success at youth level. What can he really prove as Derby assistant manager that he can’t in his current role?

He actually has significantly more coaching experience than Lampard – why go and be assistant just because Frank was a better player? It seems like a sideways move, just when his career is taking off.
