Chelsea could be losing one of their leaders in the dressing after sudden changes at the club that could spell a long term sideline to the bench.
Gary Cahill saw his position in Chelsea’s first team reduced to only bench roles last season under Antonio Conte and that seems only the beginning. The club are looking for a new players to come into the club and reports in Italy indicate central defender Danielle Rugani of Juventus is also on Maurizio Sarri’s wishlist.
The Italian manager has replaced Antonio Conte and is sure to revert to the old fashioned flat back four. That will reduce the number of central defenders the club will utilize in the coming months, and having falling behind in the pecking order at the position, with Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta all ahead of him, Cahill is beginning to rethink the next step in his career.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Cahill admits ‘it is time to change something’ when asked about his future.
“I don’t know, to be fair. I spent six years with Chelsea, I played a fantastic World Cup and maybe it is time to change something. It is not my decision. The club will decide. Now I just want to go on holidays and we will see what happens.”
