Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois joined Real Madrid on a six-year deal on Wednesday after a protest against the club’s stance not to sell him this summer.
The goalkeeper was due to return to Chelsea’s training complex some four days before the deal was announced, but he went AWOL and could not return to Stamford Bridge despite being given an extended holiday at the club after his World Cup exploits.
His departure left Chelsea fans irate with many of the club’s supporters feeling Courtois has betrayed them after the many years of show of faith in him.
Many cite the fact the as a young goalkeeper, the Blues signed him and gave him the opportunity to work with a top club like Atletico Madrid and also gave him the upper hand over club legend Petr Cech, when there was confusion over who was to be the number one between the posts for the club.
Some wag has has changed the player’s Wikipedia page biography to ‘Belgian professional snake’. And there are all manner of funny responses on Twitter.
