Gary Cahill has known for some time he does not command the powers that allow him to be selected each time in the starting 11 and Maurizio Sarri’s words as calming as they can be, tells gives him a big hint to do better.
Sarri in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Newcastle United maintains Cahill has a future a the club but does not walk into his team until he finds his form and fitness.
According to Nizaar Kinsella of Goal, the former Napoli head coach who has stuck with David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger this season in his first two Premier League games has told Cahill to learn his style of defending before getting back into the team:
Sarri on Gary Cahill: "I think in this moment, for a defender, it is more difficult to play in my team. Especially after only 20 days in training, for offensive players it is easier but for defenders it is more difficult. He needs more defensive training with us" #CFC

That means one of the first qualities Cahill has to adopt is passing and getting more comfortable on the ball under pressure. Rudiger and Luiz are among the best passers in the league this season, as they manage to find their teammates from the back with short passes.
Cahill returned late to Chelsea’s pre-season after England’s progress to the third place play off at the 2018 World Cup but Sarri’s words mean he has to adapt or sit back and watch others play.
