Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is not a favorite for any of the three midfield slots under Maurizio Sarri’s this season, and that is an open secret.
The England international has not been called on in any of Chelsea’s first three Premier League games with competition for places growing like never before at the club, especially in the midfield positions. This summer alone has seen three additions to the squad in that department, Mateo Kovacic arriving from Real Madrid, Jorginho from Napoli and Ruben Loftus-Cheek returning from his loan stint from Crystal Palace.
Despite Tiemoue Bakayoko leaving on a season long loan deal to AC Milan, there are still too many numbers in the Blues midfield and Drinkwater unfortunately is at the bottom of the pecking order.
Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Kovacic are the men preferred by Sarri now as it seems in the first few games, with Ross Barkley who signed from Everton in January also making a promising start under the Italian. Barkley, Fabregas and Loftus-Cheek may be second string of midfielders for cup games or substitute options, but there seems to be no place for Drinkwater, a hero at Leicester City in their magical title winning season in 2016.
The summer transfer is still open in other European countries and if he wants to keep his career alive, as he nears 30 years, he needs to push for that move fast, or remain a fringe player, only to be called on in times of emergency by Sarri.
