Chelsea make decision on whether on-loan players at Derby County can play against them in Carabao Cup

If Frank Lampard was hoping for any favors in his Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea in the next round of the competition, he may have found out that his former side are not ready for any niceties.

The Blues have reportedly, written off the option to allow their two loan stars at Derby County to feature in the Carabao Cup fourth round later this month. Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have looked particularly bright at Pride Park this season under Lampard and were two of Derby’s best players when they ousted Manchester United from the competition at Old Trafford last week.

ESPN say Chelsea will not make exceptions to the ‘EFL rules governing the Carabao Cup that allows for loan players to be registered if the parent club provides “written consent”‘. The Blues see no reason to write off this rule for this game.

In recent times, the only exception to the rule has been Thibaut Courtois who was allowed to play for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League while on loan from Chelsea. Jose Mourinho’s promptings to disallow the goalkeeper from being in the post was dismissed by UEFA only days before the semi-final tie.
