Forget the two wins, Chelsea are yet to play up to the favorites tag in the Europa League

Two wins out of two seem good enough for any side in any competition in football as it’s the end result that fascinates fans around the world.

But the signs may not be reassuring for Chelsea in the Europa League. The Premier League giants are yet to fully convince that they can go all the way this season in the second tier of European football. Goal records were expected to be broken in games like that on Thursday night. Against Vidi, the Blues barely created attacks that would signal a mammoth scoreline. A few here and there but not that much of a sniff at goal.

Alvaro Morata and Emerson Palmieri were guilty of missing clear chances and that may have affected the scoreline. But to great effect, Vidi stopped Maurizio Sarri’s side from scoring. Captain Roland Juhasz did a great job on Morata and his teammates and would take most of the credit.

Sarri’s attack was visibly not in the kind of form to score goals, but his side’s defense was guilty of allowing Vidi’s forward players to get at them and open up spaces to score goals. Kepa Arrizabalaga rose to the occasion most of the time and prevented his team conceding a goal against the minnows from Hungary.

The front and back lines were not exactly convincing in executing their duties last night and Sarri must make the necessary adjustments to ensure surprise setbacks are avoided in the games to come.

Chelsea are considered favorites for the Europa League title this season, but two 1-0 wins against PAOK and Vidi are not enough to convince fans that this could be the second time the club wins the competition.
