Why Chelsea’s EFL Cup clash against Bournemouth is one of the most important games this season for Maurizio Sarri

Chelsea face Bournemouth in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup on Wednesday and although the game seems to have lost some edge due to the competition and opposition, it is certainly one of the most important games for Maurizio Sarri this season.

The Blues are not sitting comfortably in the Premier League standings this campaign and although their Europa League campaign has gone bad, the unpredictability on European nights make it impossible to think the Carabao Cup is one of the better avenues to win a trophy in Sarri’s maiden season.

Chelsea sit fourth in the English top flight with 37 points after 17 games and are keenly followed by Arsenal who are only three points behind in fifth. Sarri’s side are eight points off leaders, Liverpool as the race for the championship heats up in the coming months.

The FA Cup is yet to start and Chelsea’s fate in the competition is yet to be known. The Carabao Cup now offers a better route to silverware this season and Sarri and his stars must take it with both hands.
