Finally, Maurizio Sarri has revealed to Chelsea fans why their calls for Marcos Alonso to be dropped for Emerson Palmieri has fallen on deaf ears.
The Italian tactician has dropped the biggest reason why he constantly sticks with Alonso who has refused to improve since his first season hit. Palmieri, on the other hand, has been restricted to cup games and never really gets the nod in key games.
In the Premier League, the 24-year old has only 13 minutes of substitute minutes to boast of and has yet to start any league game.
Palmieri started in Chelsea’s win over Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup on Thursday and looked very impressive on the left flank. His defensive contribution was solid while in attack, he linked up well with Eden Hazard to set up decent chances.
Sarri insists Palmieri’s quality means he will not leave Chelsea in the upcoming transfer windows, but revealed why the former Juventus left full back continues to play second fiddle to Alonso.
“Emerson will stay with us, for sure. He’s very important. He’s improving.
Sometimes I had a little problem to put him in because we are not a very physical team so when we play with three little players in the same match, set-pieces could be a problem, but not for another reason. I’m very happy with him, he’s improving and he’s a very good player.”
