The widely accepted notion is that Chelsea have been underperforming this season, but the stats suggest we should be doing better than we are.
Granted, it’s unacceptable that we are sitting in sixth place with just eight games to play. Missing out on top four is now a real possibility, which there’s no excuse for.
However, can you really blame Maurizio Sarri? He’s the easy target, but statistically, Chelsea are performing to a level beyond what the table reflects.

Have a look at this graph. You can see that Chelsea’s defence can only be bettered by Liverpool and Manchester City, while just the pair and United have a stronger attack.

In terms of goals scored and conceded, the data would place Chelsea in third or fourth place – not sixth. It’s also baffling how Arsenal have outscored us by 13 goals.
It has to come down to individual mistakes. Our defenders have had one too many brain farts, while our forward line couldn’t hit a barn door.
Yet again – can you really pin the blame on Sarri for that?
