Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has revealed that his club held talks in January over the possible acquisition of then Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.
Crikey, for a player as wasteful as Morata, he has quite the C.V.
Two stints at Real Madrid, back-to-back titles at Juventus, as well as pulling on the Chelsea and Atletico Madrid shirts. We should’ve known that Barca would also be in the conversation.
This did, in all honesty, come as a bit of a surprise when Valverde revealed all while speaking to the Spanish press. The Blaugrana manager is quoted by the Daily Star saying:
“It’s true there were conversations with him but also with other players. He signed for Atletico Madrid, he is playing in the starting 11. Good.”
“Here he was supposed to be the second striker, a different role than he has with Atletico. Every player must think about what he wants. Sometimes there are just meaningless conversations.”

Morata has been given a much more significant role under Diego Simeone than he likely would have done had he made the move to the Nou Camp back in the January window.
Though there’s little chance of the Spaniard ever returning to Chelsea, even if he is still on-loan, regular game-time increases the chances of us banking a considerable fee when he’s sold.
