‘We have to prove ourselves’ – Chelsea skipper rallies troops ahead of Liverpool showdown

Cesar Azpilicueta is buoyant about Chelsea’s chances at Anfield on Sunday as the Blues prepare for the crucial Premier League encounter with Liverpool.

The game is difficult one to predict simply because the Reds are in top form and gunning for the title, while the Blues are no pushovers, even away from home.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have looked mesmerizing at times this campaign, but complacency appears to have crept in over the past few weeks.

Liverpool continue to erase doubts that they will somehow bottle their partial hold of the title and look like they will go on to make the season a memorable one… but lying in wait is Chelsea. We have a history of halting Liverpool in their tracks for  Premier League title.

A repeat of the 2012 performance, when Chelsea beat them 2-0 in front of a packed crowd, will be pleasing to the side from West London but all too distasteful to the hopeful Liverpool fraternity. Azpilicueta certainly hopes that’s the case. He’s quoted by the Daily Star saying:

“When we went there they had the party nearly ready because they were smashing every team at Anfield. We arrived with a very clear idea and we played the game we had to. To beat that team was a very important win for the club. Hopefully we can replicate it on Sunday. But It is not about frustrating Liverpool, it is about playing our game.

We know they are fighting for the title, but for us every point is vital to finish in the top four. We need to keep the solidity we have shown in the last few games, and defend well. We have proved ourselves already at Anfield this season. Whatever you did in the past is nice – but we have to prove ourselves again on Sunday.”

Let’s hope we can pull it off!
