We have some breaking news to bring you from the French press which claims that Olivier Giroud has extended his contract with Chelsea by a year.
We knew that Giroud had the option in his deal for a further year extension, but it was unclear if he was willing to have it activated while he was playing a bit-part role.
Whether it be he or Chelsea who have made the decision is not clear at this stage, but what we do know is that Giroud will be going nowhere this summer.
That’s the information provided by French outlet Telefoot, who believe that Giroud’s one-year option was activated this week, meaning he’ll be staying at Chelsea.
Even with Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi set to return from loan, keeping Giroud around the camp makes absolute sense from a Chelsea perspective.
He’s experienced, uniquely talented and wouldn’t be able to be replaced with the transfer ban still in force. We eagerly await official announcement of this news.
