Gianfranco Zola appears to be somewhat disgruntled that Chelsea didn’t offer any clarification on his future sooner, report The Sun.
It was announced on Thursday that Zola would be leaving the club after one year as Maurizio Sarri’s assistant, with Frank Lampard being appointed head coach on the same day.
Zola cannot hold any hard feelings against Chelsea if Lampard did not see him fitting into his setup at Stamford Bridge, but the Italian feels as though the timing has left him in a difficult position.
Speaking to The Sun, Zola explained how he believes the fact Chelsea left it so late to inform him on his future means that the majority of the jobs he would have been interested in are now filled:
“I found out quite late and the manager positions of the other teams have all been sorted out. Regardless, it is a minor thing for me. It was important that it helped my career.”
“Working for a top club with a top coach has been good for me. I was head coach before and my main ambition is to return to that. But to work for Maurizio and Chelsea was a great opportunity.”
While we feel for Gianfranco, we struggle to see how Chelsea could have delivered a definitive answer on his future until they knew who would be taking the reins from Sarri this summer.
This is nobody’s fault, it’s just unfortunate.
