Football ‘expert’ Ian McGarry has made some rather intriguing predictions about what Frank Lampard’s starting eleven will be come the start of the 2019/20 campaign.
While Chelsea fans are excited to see what life under Lampard has in store, we haven’t been given much of an indication as to his philosophy or how he likes to set up his side.
Lampard used younger players frequently last term, as well as lining up in both a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. Beyond that, what Lampard will do with Chelsea is a mystery.
That’s as exciting as it is frightening, at least to us, but some of the predictions McGarry has made about how we could shape up are a little bit on the concerning side.
He’s quoted by the Daily Star saying:
“My information is that as a result of some of [the injuries to younger players], Danny Drinkwater of all people, a man who’s been in the wilderness under Maurizio Sarri and made one appearance in total last season, has been told that he’s got an opportunity to prove himself and give himself the possibility of partnering N’Golo Kante in midfield next season in a 4-2-3-1 formation.”
“At the same time, Tammy Abraham I understand will be made the lead striker ahead of the experienced Olivier Giroud. And also, Mason Mount, who’s also had a new contract, will play as a number 10.”
Though some could deem it ignorant to overlook a player in the manner he has been, we see no reason for Danny Drinkwater to be given a second opportunity to break through.
Mason Mount as the number 10 is also something that we would like to see down the line, but is he ready for that sort of responsibility at his tender age? We’re unsure.
Tammy Abraham certainly has the quality to lead the line, but we feel as though Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud will not allow him to establish himself so easily.
What do you reckon, Blues fans?
