Chelsea have elected deputy full-back for season ahead, report claims

Chelsea have decided that returning loanee Reece James will provide cover for Cesar Azpilicueta in the 2019/20 campaign, according to Goal.

The report leads on Davide Zappacosta’s likely return to Serie A, mentioning that Chelsea are unconcerned about the situation as James is ready to fill in and be Azpi’s backup this term.

Not only is this excellent news for James himself, who will likely be given plenty of opportunities in cup competitions, but it also bodes well for many of his academy counterparts.

If Frank Lampard is planning on plugging the holes in Chelsea’s squad with our most promising youngsters, then we will finally be getting what we have continually campaigned for.

Nobody has asked for teenagers to be fast-tracked into the starting eleven as it’s unrealistic and would do them no good. However, they deserve to be given the responsibilities which Goal believe James will.

We hope that this is a trend which will continue throughout Lampard’s time in charge of the club, as the gap between the academy and the first-team will FINALLY have been bridged.
