Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma explained to the club’s official website how he is ‘proud’ of the way the team played during their UEFA Super Cup defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night.
The Blues battled through 120 minutes of action, having had two less days of rest than their opponents, only to miss out on the trophy by a single penalty in the shootout. It’s hard to take.
Zouma, who’s middle name is rather fittingly ‘Happy’, has opted to look on the bright side. He told Chelsea’s official club website after the game just how proud he was of his teammates:
“We were unlucky. We deserved more than we got, even in the penalties. We can be proud because we played a very good game against a strong side. We had no fear. We gave them very difficult moments and we should have won I think. Of course we are a bit disappointed we didn’t get the trophy, but we can keep the good we did.
There are a lot of positives we can take, especially after the loss we had at the weekend. We are a big team with big players and we showed that. The lads gave everything for 120 minutes. We were all focused and we all did our jobs so we can be proud of that.”
The Frenchman is right to focus on the positives, with Chelsea’s performance being polished and spirited, nothing like the lacklustre displays we often saw under Maurizio Sarri last season.
We are heading in the right direction, which is all we can ask for at this premature stage of Lampard’s time in charge. Zouma, with his positive mindset, has a huge role to play in that.
