Thomas Tuchel admits they could look at backup options for Ben Chilwell but stays hopeful

Ben Chilwell has been back doing some light running on the grass at Chelsea’s training centre this week with hope growing that he might not need surgery.

The Blues left back has been out injured since the Juventus game after damaging his ACL. However, Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel are hopeful that he could be back sooner rather than later and will not require surgery, that will see him miss much more time.

Tuchel faced questions on the subject yesterday in his pre-match Everton press conference, and some further quotes have surfaced on the Chelsea website after last nights embargoed section was released.

The Chelsea boss was positive about Chilwell being back running and is hopeful that they wont need to look for backup options. However, he does also say that they could go down that road and will cross that river when they come to it.

“We are having a look at players and then being confident to get them or if it’s possible in winter,” Tuchel said whilst he previewed tomorrow’s clash with Everton.

“There’s a big gap in between these two situations and we know this. The best option would be that Ben [Chilwell] continues his positive evaluation.

“He is in a good place mentally and physically. He did some running, and everything looks good. So, hopes are still up but we cannot confirm that.

“We cross the river when we are at the river,” Tuchel said when asked about backup options for Chilwell.

“First, we need to be sure what we do with Ben and watch the situation.

“We’re still in there, and then we decide if we go for internal solutions and if we can overcome this period, everything depends on Ben Chilwell.

“How long he is out and then on the alternative, if there is a chance to do something. We did not start this process because also to protect ourselves and to lose focus on the most important things. The most important things right now are Ben and Marcos [Alonso] and from there we go.”
