Sky Sports have a really interesting interview with Mason Mount this week where they go into a lot of depth about his amazing 2021.
They also go into quite a lot of interesting tactical and statistical detail on how his role has changed, both in his career so far and under Thomas Tuchel in the last year.
He’s having more touches in the opposition box than at any point in his career now he’s deployed as part of a front 3, and he also explained how playing on the other side of the pitch was affecting how he played:
“Last year, I was mainly on the left. I became very used to cutting inside on my right last season. Now there is maybe more focus on crossing and going down the line to cut balls back.”
Playing on that side also allows him to link up with Reece James, a player he knows well from their academy days together:
“I know how he plays and I know how he likes to combine with someone. It is us on the right trying to create chances and work off each other. When he moves inside, I go on the outside, when I move inside, he stays wide. It is all about getting the best from each other.”
We’ve seen the two of them link up to devastating effect quite often this season, and that chemistry will likely only improve the more time they spend together playing on the right.
In fact, as good as Mason has been in the last 3 seasons, he keeps getting better, and shows no signs of slowing down.
