Armando Broja is one of the Chelsea players with an uncertain future, and today’s Hampshire Live sees a discussion about whether he will return on loan to Southampton – and even if they have a chance to sign him permanently.
They are quite positive, citing reports from West Ham sites who are also keen on signing the Albania striker.
It’s noted that new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is going to be looking to raise money before buying players:
“Todd Boehly isn’t expected to spend as much as Abramovich, any additional money coming into the club would be welcomed,” the piece speculates.
It largely depends what happens to (Romelu) Lukaku, (Timo) Werner or any of the other struggling forwards, but my guess is that Borja will be sold, or at least loaned again.”
The logic is that, while Roman Abramovich might have been happier to sign off on further years of loans and ultimately risk a loss if Broja leaves on a free or sees his value drop, Boehly will be more keen to balance the books, and offset any summer spending with immediate sales.
We will have to see if the new owner is indeed as frugal as is being implied.
Chelsea already tried a very expensive gamble with Lukaku.
A few years ago they felt Armando Broja was a worthwhile investment.
Let us test that theory next season. It could be a very cost saving strategy.
The other option is to loan him out again, probably sell him off with an option/commitment to buy.
Then… in a couple of years spend up to £100m buying back what was once ours.
Our youth system has not produced but nurtured amazing talent over the years.
