Reece James is a top player, but he’s got a fight on his hands to become England’s first choice right back.
Just through bad luck, he happens to be competing with two of the Premier League’s best right backs for a place in the England team.
Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold both play in different ways, but all three players are in the top few in the world in their position.
So any mistake or bad performance by one is sure to be capitalised on by the others, as we might see with the penalty Reece James gave away shortly after coming on today.
It was a very harsh award, as James’ teammate Conor Coady pointed out in quotes picked up by Football.London.
“I was the same (perplexed), I think we all were the same,” Coady said after the game.
“I think we were a little bit shocked at first, no one really appealed for the penalty. It’s one of them, I’ve not seen it back, don’t know where his arms are but I don’t know where they can go or what they can do.”
England ended up losing the game 1-0 because of the spot kick. James will get his chance again in the next few games, but he knows he’s got some catching up to do now.
