Aurelien Tchouameni was a Chelsea target last summer, and it seems he’s a target again this summer.
It felt for a while like he was going to make the move to Stamford Bridge, but Real Madrid closed in so quickly that we had all but given up hope, especially given the sanctions on Chelsea.
But his quotes this weekend, as cited by Football.London, give us an injection of hope.
When asked on France duty whether he had decided about his future, he said “no, not yet.”
Monaco’s director of football Paul Mitchell is of course more heavily incentivised to create a bidding war, so inevitably he was playing up the fact that anything is possible:
“The market is different every year. Everyone was able to realize what a top player Aurelien is, but everyone also knows that we are an ambitious club with an ambitious shareholder, so no, I have no preference when it comes to selling him. We will have to be very aggressive in terms of supply for us to lose such an incredibly gifted player.”
It’s a slim chance, but it feels like this race isn’t over yet. Tchouameni may well want to join Real Madrid – but if Chelsea are offering Monaco significantly more, they will take our offer and not Madrid’s.
