Chelsea are going to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla this summer, that looks certain.
But the Blues are going to lose two starting central defenders, and have two into their late 30s, so a second purchase is almost certainly going to be necessary.
Top of that list seems to be Matthijs de Ligt. The 22 year old is a great player, with established Champions League pedigree. But as it stands, he will be very expensive.
Football.London claim that there could be a wrinkle that makes thing a little easier though – they say that the Dutch international will sign a new contract at Juventus, with a lower release clause than the existing €120m fee.
That would be a good compromise for the club, who would prevent their asset getting closer to the end of his existing deal, while also allowing de Ligt to feel he still has a reasonable get out clause.
