Chelsea are turning the corner this summer, looking in position to start signing players, but the painful feeling of watching two first team players walk away on free transfers is not one that the club want to repeat.
That’s why players like Jorginho – who has one year left on his contract now – have to either sign up to a new one or agree to be sold. No matter how good a servant they’ve been, if they don’t want to commit, they have to go.
Sadly, his comments in today’s interview in the Athletic sound very much like those of a man who is running down the clock and waiting for his free transfer payday.
“I feel very well here and, of course, I’d like to stay,” he said.
“But, you know, there is a lot going on, and we don’t know. As I said before, I am here now and I have a contract. I love to be here, I feel very well here. So I don’t think about moving anywhere. I think I have a good relationship with the manager… that’s what he shows! I hope so.”
This kind of waffle can get you through years of speculation – as we’ve seen in Jorginho’s case above all others. But now it’s time to get specific, and if he’s continuing to be this vague, that can only mean one thing – he’s off next summer, and we won’t get a penny for him.
