Chelsea’s imminent signing of Kalidou Koulibaly will bring together the central defender with his international teammate, Edouard Mendy.
It’s always vital for goalkeeper and central defenders to have a good understanding, and this should give both of them a useful head start this season.
Koulibaly will be settling in to a new league after many years in Italy, and this will hopefully speed up that process. It’s not a done deal yet of course – dealing with Napoli is tricky at the best of times, and this is not a player they want to get rid of. But the signs are good, and Mendy must be doing his best to grease the wheels.

We have no idea how it will really work out, but it’s certain that the idea of partnering a dominant centre back with his established international teammate at the back will have played into Chelsea’s thinking in prioritising Koulibaly over other options at a similar price.
