Why Napoli accepted Chelsea’s Koulibaly offer after years of failures

Chelsea have had an offer accepted for Kalidou Koulibaly, leading fans to look back to the first time we were linked with the defender.

Most traced it back to the summer of 2016, and since then there have been rumours almost every window, with various attempts to sign him for various managers falling flat.

What’s changed? Well Nick Purewal of the Press Association says it’s all to do with the new owner.

He Tweeted that the Italian club were “impressed by Todd Boehly” after having had “tricky” dealings with Chelsea previously – presumably some spiky confrontations with Marina Granovskaia.

It backs up a morning full of praise for Boehly and his team, with the proof being in the pudding that deals like this one – which has dragged on for literally years – are now suddenly being done with minimal fuss.

How refreshing for those of us who have been covering them since the very start…
