Today saw shocking footage of Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko being stopped by police in threatening fashion, with the France capped international searched by armed police in the middle of Milan.
In quotes picked up by ESPN, the Polizia have already responded to the social media explosion judging their actions.
They defended the offers’ actions as totally proportional to what the officer had been responding to, essentially hinting that there was an extremely serious situation that justified these extreme means.
You can read their statement here:
“It should be noted that the search occurred in an operational context that justified the adoption of the highest security measures,” the statement read.
“Also as a function of self-protection, and [it] was carried out in a manner absolutely consistent with the type of alarm in progress.
“Once the person had been identified and [it had been] established that he was not involved, the service was resumed without any kind of remark from the person concerned.”
Without knowing what exactly they thought was going on, it’s hard to say whether it was justified. But it’s a terrible look, as an innocent man is aggressively accosted by people with brandished weapons, on a calm morning in the middle of broad daylight.
Bakayoko is unsure of his future in Milan, as the Serie A team try to cut short his loan before it enters the second of its two consistuent seasons. This is hardly going to make him want to stay.
