The focus among Chelsea fans today has been on the fact that players like Billy Gilour and Armando Broja aren’t going to get their chance to impress Thomas Tuchel in preseason.
They’re not going to even get a sniff of showing the boss what they can do, while useless squad members like Michy Batshuayi and Ross Barkley continue to get unjust chances.

But for every Gilmour there’s an Ethan Ampadu, and after a couple of patient years out on loan, the Wales international got a chance in the preseason friendly on Sunday morning against Club America.
He played well, and his versatility means he’s likely to get minutes in the games to come too. It’s no guarantee he sticks around all season, but given Malang Sarr got lots of games last season, there seems no reason Ampadu can’t too.
We’ve always been very impressed by Ethan in a Blue shirt – let’s hope Tuchel is too.
