Frank Lampard can give Billy Gilmour a second shot at the big time

Any Chelsea fan who was watching the team a couple of years ago will be able to tell you right away how Billy Gilmour is.

There aren’t many players from living memory who have made such an impression in their first few games for the club.

An injury that cut him down after he first broke into Frank Lampard’s plans always looked like it might end up being a true sliding doors moment, and so far that’s proving to be the case. He hasn’t looked the same player since, and hasn’t been a regular for any of his teams.

The Liverpool Echo think he could yet return to play for Lampard at Everton, his new team, and finally get the commitments he needs to shine.

“Gilmour first broke into the Chelsea senior side against Liverpool in the FA Cup and played in the number six role. In that match, he was absolutely fantastic and at such a young age, he dominated a superb Liverpool midfield in a position that usually requires plenty of maturity and experience,” they quoted Chelsea writer Bobby Vincent as saying.

“The defensive side of his game needs some improvement, it’s more about what he can do when in possession. He’s not an old-school defensive midfielder, who is going to put in crunching tackles consistently, but he’s someone who keeps the game ticking over really well.”

We have full faith that that ability is still in Gilmour somewhere, it’s just about being in the right place and the right time to show it. This Everton team could yet be a nightmare, but we can see it being a great platform too.
