Buyback clause makes Colwill deal easier to swallow for Chelsea fans

The Athletic’s piece on Chelsea’s transfer window has some interesting notes about young players who would leave.

Top of the list is Levi Colwill, who is being linked with a permanent move to Brighton.

This is worrying for Chelsea fans – they’ve seen their side sell Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori and regret it in the last two years alone. The only consolation here is that the Blues will have a buyback clause in Colwill’s deal, making it possible to bring him back to Stamford Bridge if he continues with his impressive development.

That makes a sale slightly more palatable for supporters, without doubt.

But even then, fans should be very wary – a buyback clause is no guarantee, as we may see next summer with Tammy Abraham. He can be redeemed from Roma for a fixed fee, but if he has another great year there, why would he want to return?
