When Malang Sarr signed for Chelsea on a free transfer two years ago, it was pretty clear he was never going to be a true first team player.
He had some talent, but it was an opportunistic buy for the chance to flip him for a few million down the line. His first year at the club – spent on loan at Porto where he was unable to break into the first team – rather killed the chances of making any big money on him.
Last year he played a bit in the first team, but that was more of a sign of our weakness than his strength.
There is still interest this summer, with Fulham apparently keen on him. But according to the Athletic’s Chelsea transfer explainer today, he won’t be sold until a defender comes in.
That should happen this week with any luck, and there the story of Sarr at Chelsea could end, as tamely as it began.
