Chelsea turn one-off tactical switch into new starting formation

The team news for Chelsea’s game against Leeds is out, and there are a few really interesting things to note.

Last week we saw Reece James drop into the back three, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek taking his place at right wing back.

The plan there was to use James’ physicality further back to nullify Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane. It worked brilliantly, and RLC was great down the right hand side to boot.

Later in the game, James was unleashed down the right himself, just when Spurs thought they were safe.

It felt like a one-off tactical switch, but it performed so well that Thomas Tuchel has kept it for this week’s game. Has our manager just stumbled across a starting system that he might stick with?

Not only does it work well on the pitch, it also reduces our need to sign a new right wing back and a new centre back.
