Thomas Tuchel says Chalobah “feels the pressure” of his second season

Thomas Tuchel has been speaking to Chelsea’s official app today ahead of our game against Leicester, and the focus was on the one change he made to the team that lost 3-0 against Leicester last week.

Trevoh Chalobah comes in to start his first game of the season, replacing the suspended Kalidou Koulibaly.

It’s a big moment for Trevoh, who is a year on from his impressive breakout in the UEFA Super Cup. Tuchel had some interesting words about the defender and the difference between this season and last season.

“Trevoh plays as a direct replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly who is suspended, so it was an easy decision for us. He feels a little bit the pressure of a different role for him this season. Last year he came into the side as somewhat of an underdog, the challenger trying to break into the side because nobody knew too much of what he could offer,” Tuchel said in quotes picked up by Football.London.

“Now I have a feeling that he is growing as a player and he’s putting a lot of pressure and expectation on himself. This is a normal progression for a young player like Trevoh and we have the belief in him. Today is his chance to show this and usually we can always rely on him to perform.”

There have been plenty of rumours about Chalobah going out on loan or on a permanent move, and certainly this will be the last chance he gets in the first team at Chelsea for a while, with the arrival of Wesley Fofana now all but confirmed.

Let’s hope for a good showing today.
