“It is a foul” – Thomas Tuchel backs controversial VAR decision

Chelsea got done over by a harsh VAR decision against Tottenham a few weeks ago, and Thomas Tuchel’s anger about that on the pitch and in the press conference afterwards directly lead to fines and a ban for the Blues coach.

Today they were on the right end of a decision. Edouard Mendy was clipped by Jarrod Bowen’s foot as he parried a ball, and after Maxwell Cornet smashed the ball in, VAR cancelled the goal.

It was a very tight call – and probably the wrong one in our opinion. Bowen’s contact came after Mendy had knocked the ball to Cornet.

But Thomas Tuchel insisted in his press conference that it was a foul – although given his recent experiences, he wasn’t willing to go into too much detail.

“It went in our favour and there’s a reason it went in our favour. In my opinion, it is a foul,” the coach said in quotes picked up by Football.London.

“I will not comment anymore but what happened against Tottenham was so obvious and I paid a lot of money for commenting, so I will not do it.”

You win some and you lose some. Today we were very lucky to walk away with three points, and whether or not it was a foul, we will have to be so much better in the weeks to come if we want to not have to rely on the referees to keep saving us.
